Mask Gouro - Ivory Coast

Coming from the North, the Gouros, Mandé population, arrived in this region in the 16th century.
The Gouro are called Lo or Golo and call themselves Kwieni. The Baoulé call them Gouro.
Gu or Gou masks are mainly female masks that accompany Zamble and Zaouli masks. They are considered as the wife of the Zamblé.
These masks follow the male mask in ceremonies.Their function is apotropaic, and represents a young woman endowed with the criteria of beauty peculiar to the Gouro, in particular the facial scarifications and the filed teeth.
It is by singing in honor of Zamble that graciously moves the Gou, following the sound of the flute.
The dancer is entirely covered with fabrics and vegetable fibers of bright colors in harmony with those of the mask.
They belong to the worship of Yo, and have virtually disappeared for lack of attractiveness, their dance is no longer impressive enough.
Nowadays when we mention the Gu mask, the men shrug their shoulders and say it's a mask of the old generation of dancers.

Les masques Gu ou Gou sont principalement des masques féminins qui accompagnent les masques Zamble et Zaouli. Ils sont considérés comme l'épouse du Zamblé.
Ces masques suivent le masque masculin dans les cérémonies. Leur fonction est apotropaïque, et représente une jeune femme dotée des critères de beauté propres au Gouro, notamment les scarifications faciales et les dents limées.
C'est en chantant en l'honneur de Zamble que se déplace gracieusement le Gou, en suivant le son de la flûte.
La danseuse est entièrement recouverte de tissus et fibres végétales de couleurs vives en harmonie avec celles du masque.
Ils appartiennent au culte de Yo, et ont pratiquement disparu faute d'attractivité, leur danse n'est plus assez impressionnante.
De nos jours, lorsque nous mentionnons le masque Gu, les hommes haussent les épaules et disent que c'est un masque de l'ancienne génération de danseurs.
