Mask Fang - NGIL - Gabon

Mask found in Central Africa, in Gabon in the northern part of the country (Wolenntem province) and in the center (Middle Ogoue province). This mask was used by the men of the secret society Ngil who was in charge of initiations. The role of the white kaolin patina on the face was to combat witchcraft and also evoked the power of the ancestors. Funeral mask, it was worn by a dancer who appeared at night with the members of the tribe, all provided with torches to celebrate the funeral of a great chief of the tribe. Also used to denounce the culprits and to punish them. (around 1900) prohibited after 1910 by the colonists.

Masque que l’on retrouve en Afrique Centrale, au Gabon dans la partie nord du pays(province wolenntem) et au centre(province du moyen-Ogoue). Ce masque était utilise par les hommes de la societe secrete Ngil qui était chargee des initiations. La patine en kaolin blanc sur le visage avait pour role de combattre la sorcellerie et evoquait aussi le pouvoir des ancetres.Masque funeraire,il était porte par un danseur qui apparaissait la nuit avec les membres de la tribu,tous muni de torches pour celebrer les funerailles d’un grand chef de la tribu.Aussi utilise pour dennoncer les coupables et les punir.Masque tres anciens interdit apres 1910 par les colons.
